OBSTACLES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR IMMIGRANTS AND REFUGEES ARTISTIC DEVELOPMENT (Research Study)

The way artistic activity is organised in European societies, and the marginalisation of migrants and refugees who are also part of the European population, make it difficult for them to get in contact with the artistic sector, to acquire related soft skills and develop their creativity. A number of obstacles of different types prevents them not only from fully enjoying artistic manifestations, but also from having the opportunity to find in the world of arts a way to personal development and social emancipation. Moreover, the whole European society misses the chance to enrich its artistic heritage with contributions built upon their diverse experiences, languages, cultures, perspectives, etc. La langue des Oiseaux intends to contribute to revert this discrimination and impoverishment and promote an encounter between migrants and refugees and live arts based on the respect and promotion of linguistic and cultural diversity and of the plurality of perspectives that it entails. With this aim, the project includes a Research Study on the Obstacles and Opportunities for Migrants and Refugees’ Artistic Development. A Team of Experts will scientifically analyse the problems by collecting evidence and information from the LTTAs and the meetings, systematize them and make them dialogue with the existent literature on migration, inclusion and social cohesion, cultural and linguistic diversity, culture and arts, and on the relationship between them. This work includes the drawing up and implementation of monitoring and evaluation tools for the whole project in terms of scientific usefulness. Given the intersectionality of the problem at issue and the multiplicity of fields encompassed, this study needs to adopt a multidisciplinary perspective, which constitutes an important element of innovation. At the same time, it intends to be a basic reference for decisionmakers, public and private agents, organizations and activists working in different sectors, moved by the willingness to tear down the soft frontiers which separates refugees and migrants from the artistic world and to build bridges of intercultural communication and cooperation. The Study will be published in electronic formats, in English and in other languages (at least the languages of the countries and regions represented in the project). It will be spread through the communication channels of the project partners and their local and international networks, and it will be presented in public functions. The Research Study will be committed to a Team consisting of Experts with socio-linguistic and socio-political backgrounds and one specialized in research methods and strategies, provided by Linguapax. The project partners with artistic backgrounds will provide the Team with their expertise during the LTTAs, the meetings and other forms of collaborative work at distance thanks to electronic means. The final version of these tools will be available afterwards for future activities of the same type.
